2009 – MAJOR TROPHY SHOW JUDGES REPORT

HEILA BRITS (Brilows Bull Terriers)

Firstly a word of thanks to each and everyone that made the day possible. Also a special word of thanks and appreciation to my co-judges, James Mollentze and Nico du Preez. It was an honour judging with you. Oh! Before I forget – a ring steward that deserves a great applause – Steve McLean.  Hearty congratulations to all the winners!

Herewith my critique on the classes I judged or acted as referee.

Judge A: James Mollentze

Judge B:  Heila Brits

Judge C: Nico du Preez

BEST IMPORTED DOG – CANDLESTICKS TROPHY – (JUDGES Mollentze & Brits)

This class was a split decision between No. 1 – Ch Bilboen Rebel In Red at Stelron (Imp UK) and No. 3 – Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada (Imp UK).

My choice went to Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada. I was immediately impressed with his confidence, great power, strength, substance, bone and spirit when entering the ring. His temperament is outgoing and friendly, loving and he enjoyed every moment in the ring with his handler.

This 5 year old heavyweight could be called a little long cast, but his virtue is his outstanding big, strong, powerful head, long, deep, well-filled with perfect scissors bite and his wide-set canines, strong under-jaw and tight lips. His nice long neck flows into well laid shoulders, his chest is muscular, broad with deep brisket and nicely rounded ribs well sprung.  He has a straight front and strong, well angulated hind-quarters with well developed second thighs. He moves well coming but closer behind, but always with power and drive. For his age he is a cracker and still a dog of substance, well handled to perfection.

For me Ch Bilboen Rebel In Red at Stelron, a well-balanced red, has a head too feminine, and this was his downfall against the bigger and stronger dog with an outstanding, great head – the main virtue of our breed.

Referee Nico du Preez seemed to have the same idea and his choice also went to Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada.

DOGS UNDER TWO YEARS – ORMANDY VASE – (JUDGES  Mollentze & Du Preez)

Winner by unanimous decision – No. 8 – Ch Lubjan Monchou of Rhizen.

DOGS OVER TWO YEARS – ORMANDY JUG – (JUDGES  Du Preez & Brits)

This was a split decision between No. 17 – Ch Ipon the Rock and No. 19 - Ch Morningside Denzel So Sweet.

My choice was No. 19 - Ch Morningside Denzel So Sweet. He’s a big, strong, powerfully built and balanced white dog with eye patch and in super hard condition.

Head long, strong and deep with nice profile and good expression. Canines correct with perfect scissors bite and tight lips. His neck is muscular and nicely flows into a level topline.  His strong quarters are well turned. He has a straight front with good bone and broad chest with beautifully sprung ribs. His shoulders are well laid back and his elbows neatly under his body. Movement excellent both ways with good powerful drive. This also won him the title of Best Mover in Show. Very well presented and handled to perfection!

Referee Mollentze also chose Ch Morningside Denzel So Sweet.

BEST COLOURED DOG – RHEEDER TROPHY – (JUDGE Mollentze & Brits)

Another split decision between No. 3, Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada (Imp UK) and No. 17, Ch Ipon the Rock.

Although Ch Ipon the Rock had better balance, he could, for me, not match the head, substance and movement of Ch Bullyview Leading Role to Navada.

Referee Du Preez chose No. 17 -  Ch.  Ipon the Rock.

DOG OF THE YEAR 2009 – SABTC VICTOR SHIELD - (JUDGES Brits & Du Preez)

Two good, muscular competitors contested this title. What a proud moment for both their owners!

Nico du Preez and I both chose No 8 – Ch Lubjan Monchou of Rhizen. He just tips the scale in his favour with his enormous substance and bone and very short- coupled body against the Ormandy Jug winner, No. 19 – Ch. Morningside Denzel So Sweet.

Both are two great dogs of immense quality, type and good, powerful movers.

BEST IMPORTED BITCH – WENTWORTH TROPHY – ( JUDGES Mollentze & Du Preez)

Both judges agreed on the Winner No. 25 – Ch Stamic High Ambition of Kunjuri (Imp UK)

BITCHES UNDER TWO YEARS – ORMANDY VASE – (JUDGES BRITS & Du Preez)

We chose No. 32 – Reithsons Clareece - a very attractive lady with red head patch. She immediately caught my eye as she entered the ring. She’s outgoing and enjoyed the ring. Shapely with sweeping body lines. Long, unbroken, classical profile with good length of foreface, well set eyes and ear placement to give that  beautiful expression, mouth scissors bite and correctly placed canines, finished with tight-fitting lips. Long arched neck, that flows into well-laid shoulders. Complete gun- barrel front with correct length of upper arm and layback of shoulder, which brings her elbows into the correct line underneath her.

Tight feet with good bone. Level topline and well turned rear. Her movement both ways is good and with drive. Her handler handled this lady to perfection!

BITCHES OVER TWO YEARS – ORMANDY JUG – (JUDGES Mollentze & Brits)

Split decision between No. 40 – Ch Ipon Glamazon of Carradice and No. 42 - Ch Niroux Spirits Pride of Carradice.

My choice went to No. 40 - Ch Ipon Glamazon of Carradice - White bitch with red patch, long, deep head with enough fill, good expression. Front good, long neck and less upright in shoulder than the other two competitors. Movement not great.

This class, in my eyes, was not representative of the best of our South African Bull Terrier bitches.

All three competitors had strong heads, but their lay-back of shoulder was all but good and their movement poor. No. 42 – Ch Niroux Spirits Pride of Carradice with her greater substance caught my eye but had to be dragged around the ring and I couldn’t see  her movement properly. She definitely didn’t like it in the ring!

Referee Du Preez chose No. 42 – Ch Niroux Spirits Pride of Carradice.

BEST COLOURED BITCH – RHINESTONE SHIELD – (JUDGES Mollentze & Du Preez)

Split decision: As referee I had No. 35 – Ch Sandawana Be Dazzled Of Shodan against No. 36 – Wild Thing – a tri-coloured bitch with strong head but upright shoulders causing a dippy back, resulting in less than great movement.

My choice:  No 35 – Ch Sandawana Be Dazzled of Shodan – is a well-balanced brindle with reasonable head, good front, nice neck, but could do with more substance and bone.  Her better  movement and the fact that she kept her good topline on the move - made her my easy choice.

BITCH OF THE YEAR – VICTRIX SHIELD – (JUDGES Mollentze & Brits)

We both chose No. 32 – Reithsons Clareece - a very easy winner!

SUPREME BULL TERRIER OF SA 2009 – (Judged by all three judges)

My winner:  No. 32 – Reithsons Clareece. For me her perfectly balanced, all square, well-filled body with nice smooth lines, her perfect, long deep, strong and beautifully filled head with nice turn, together with that good eye and excellent expression, nicely arched neck and  excellent movement, easily tipped the scale in her favour.

BEST COLOURED BULL TERRIER – BRILOWS TROPHY - (JUDGES Mollentze & Du Preez)

Split decision: My choice went to No. 17 – Ch Ipon The Rock.

A tall, upstanding, beautiful black brindle with a long, strong head with nice, curved profile, level bite, with one tight canine. Nice expression. Neck long, with good, laid shoulders and short back, straight front and neat feet with good substance.

Good front, nicely sprung, broad chest. Movement good in front, but close behind.

Outclassed the bitch competitor, No. 35 - Ch Sandawana Be Dazzled of Shodan - with ease with his much better head, substance and quality.

BEST IMPORTED BULL TERRIER  - (JUDGES Brits & Du Preez)

Unanimous decision in favour of No. 3 – Ch Bullyview Leading Role at Navada.

BEST HEAD – MONTESANO TROPHY – (JUDGES Mollentze & Brits)

Unanimous decision for No. 32 – Reithsons Clareece

BEST MOVER – TOM HORNER TARTARY TROPHY – (JUDGES Brits & Du Preez)

A close decision between the Supreme winner - No. 32 - Reithsons Clareece and No. 19 – Ch Morningside Denzel So Sweet, that showed his great drive and absolute parallel movement both ways to clinch this trophy.

My thanks to all exhibitors. It was an honour to put my hands on all your outstanding, well-presented and beautiful animals.
