WESTERN PROVINCE
BULL TERRIER
CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP SHOW
OCTOBER 2009
JUDGE
- DIRK
RUPPING (NARCIANO)
Many thanks to the
Committee of the Western Province Bull Terrier Club for this prestigious
appointment and to my Ring Steward, Mr. Charles Engel who kept the
discipline in the ring during the day to an absolute high. Also a big
thank you to the exhibitors for allowing me to judge their precious
animals on the day.
The quality was mixed with
bitches, on the whole, being better than the dogs. Movement and head
profile are the two “areas” that I think there can be improve on.
Although there were excellent heads and movement on the day, the
majority of exhibitors lack to a certain amount these very important
virtuous. On the positive side I think the body lines improved a lot the
past few years and the temperament of the specimen judged was
outstanding. The top eight exhibitors on this show are of high quality
and can compete with the best in South Africa. The Best of Breed and the
Reserve Best of Breed are both excellent examples of the general
requirement on the appearance of Bull Terriers namely:-
“Strongly built,
masculine for dogs and feminine for bitches, well balanced and active
with a keen, determined and intelligent expression”.
STANDARD BULL TERRIERS

Certificate, Best Junior, Best Head, Best Mover, Best of Breed,
and Best in Show -
REITHSONS CLAREECE (DOB 20/07/08)
Owner/Breeder: Mr DW Thompson
A well balanced female with excellent Bull Terrier type. Her head is
well filled, long and strong with small piercing eyes and with that Bull
Terrier intelligent look. The mouth possesses teeth that have a perfect
regular and complete scissors bite with clean and tight lips. Excellent
hindquarters when viewed from behind with well bended stifle. When she
was asked to move, all these afore said virtues act together to give the
required output of an excellent mover. She moves with purpose coming
and going cover ground powerfully. Forelegs reaching out well and hind
legs moving smoothly at hip. Flexing well at stifle and hock. She keeps
her super top line straight while moving. An excellent example of the
Bull Terrier Breed and definitely a worthy future Champion.

MINIATURE BULL TERRIERS
This is the first time in South Africa that Miniature Bull Terriers were
to compete against Standard Bull Terriers in a specialist show. What a
pleasure it was to be able to judge these little “Pocket Rockets” of the
Bull Terrier breed. In the words of their owners “They love to be with
their family, busy as bees and are a polite breed. The Miniature Bull
Terrier has all of the spunk and tenacity of the larger Bull Terrier,
just in a smaller package. They are part and parcel of the breed and
overall excellent ambassadors wherever they go.”
The Best of Breed and Reserve Best in
Show was the Champion Bitch April Snow of New Galloway. This little
bitch possesses movement that a lot of the standard specimen on the day
could only dream of. Nice full body with adequate head and big teeth
with nice scissors bite. This little bitch got a lovely temperament (it
seems to me a trait that all mini’s posses) and in very good condition.
She was handled and moved well with the correct tail set and carriage.
The RBOB was the Champion Dog Little Chilli Peppers Pole Position of
Galloway of Lusahn. Muscular shoulders, symmetrical body, with quality
head with a keen intelligent expression and good profile. (Especially
for a miniature where the head is the area where the Miniatures cannot
always compete with the Standard Bull Terrier.)
All the exhibitors were strongly built
and full of fire with maximum substance.
CC Dog & Best Puppy –
Lusahn Tiny Morris
CC Bitch - Double
Dutch from Friar’s Point of Lusahn [Imp]
To conclude – The mini’s are here to
stay and I believe their popularity which is already high, will only
increase in the future.
* Note – All male animals that were
present on the day had two normal testicles that were fully descended
into the scrotum.
